My School Montessori
Homely Atmosphere: The converted school building is a bungalow set on premises of one acre. It has a lovely playground with a lawn for pony rides, play equipment, pets, ball games, a trampoline, and a child-size purpose built heated swimming pool.
Teaching Staff and Staff-Pupil Ratio: The ratio is 1 teacher for every 3 children; this includes a qualified Montessori class teacher, a qualified Montessori class support teacher and student teachers from a Montessori college. The teaching staff have either an overseas or local qualification from reputable Montessori colleges. We also incorporate Special Educational Needs Teachers with a degree qualification and Occupational Therapists.
Library: We have over a thousand childrens books. We have an in-house library, where children have access to books. We encourage children to develop a love for reading from 1 – 12 years of age.
Reading Schemes: We use the Oxford Reading Tree books of both Phonic and non-Phonic reading levels. They are accompanied by CDs. Comprehension cards, story sequencing cards and work books accompany the books.
Language Activities: In our multilingual environment, we use many different types of activities to help childrens Speaking and Listening skills.
Standardized Montessori and Other Well Researched Apparatus: We not only use the standardized Montessori equipment, Galt and Early Learning Centre teaching apparatus, but also child-sized pottery designed by Bijal Shah (Headmistress and Director) for the school. This pottery is now being used in Montessori schools in Britain and America. An article was published in the Montessori international Magazine, issue 64, July-September 2002 edition about this pottery.
Basic Science, History and Geography: Basic concepts in these subjects are taught informally through simple experiments and structured play activities. For example: The Plant & Animal Kingdom; Evolution & Time Line; Land Forms & Continents, e.t.c.
School Events: Once a term, we do one major event. The three events in a year are: Swimming Gala, Fun Sports Day and a Musical Concert.
